Review of The Land: Swarm (Book 5)
I give this a 3/5, though the narrator did a great job! Did anything actually happen in this book? Okay, I guess, some things did happen. The title seems incongruous with what did happen, which the main thing involved the pixies, so I think I see where he was going with this, but the connotations promised in the title did not deliver. Additionally, my complaints with previous books about the immaturity and skankiness feels like it got worse rather than better. He seems to--and other characters as well--seem to focus too much on his own lust, so that I wonder how they've not contracted diseases...oh right, there is a master healer so there's no consequences for any vice. I don't mind a little interpersonal relationship or intimacy, and it's not graphic, but meaningless sex with whoever is willing really makes me not care what happens to the MC. That might not be true for everyone, it's just my opinion. The MC also seem very irrational at times and often even somewhat bipolar, going from high noble qualities and speech to 14 year old boy having a temper tantrum after learning about girls for the first time. Perhaps this is the real reason I get annoyed, because I actually like the dwarven smith who has some of the more disgusting qualities of the MC, but he is more a constant instead of having a jumping personality. Though I enjoyed parts of the book, for the most part it felt like not much happened in this book and that it was kind of stagnant, just written as a place holder. I'm hoping the next one will improve my opinion of the MC and tie up the loose strings that are bothering me.
